STREET: eXpressions’ ‘Evolve’ blends classical and contemporary in ambitious show

eXpressions Dance Company challenged itself in its spring production to explore what it means to “Evolve,” a concept the company faithfully explores throughout its entire performance. eXpressions does not merely examine a physical evolution — it is an evolution of emotion, an evolution of intricate movement, an evolution of sound and ultimately the evolution of the company as a dance group on campus. eXpressions has chosen a brilliantly dynamic theme for its spring show, and the dancers serve themselves well by employing this theme as the driving concept of all 11 of their pieces.

eXpressions’ upcoming spring show, “Evolve,” seems appropriately named considering the group’s evolution since its founding in 1979. eXpressions was Princeton’s first student-run dance company and tended to favor jazz back in the 1980s. Few realize that eXpressions is only a de facto all-female company. There is no clause in the company’s charter that states it will refuse male auditionees, and understandably so, considering the group was originally co-ed. However in recent years, the company has earned a campus reputation as the all-female lyrical dance company filled with girls looking to continue their competition days. Publicity chair Silvia Lundgren ’15, confessed to initially having a negative image of the company as one of the less serious dance groups.

OK, yesterday may have been a struggle, but I have a feeling that today is going to be the day that you finally get on top of me. STREET: Your mid-semester resolutions

With the end of the school year right on the horizon (just beyond Lawnparties, Houseparties and final exams, if you have a hard time seeing it), you might think it’s too late to change. The extensive list of resolutions you made on that night-you-don’t-remember-so-well in January has been collecting dust in the recesses of your mind for quite some time now. Although there are four weeks left of the spring semester, just remember: there are still four weeks left of the spring semester. Now can be the time to begin bringing up your GPA by a few decimal points, meeting new people and hitting the gym at least three times a week. Thank. God. It’s. (Charter.) Friday.

Unfortunately, East Coast weather prevents us from streaking in the park and skinny dipping in the dark, but hey, at least Charter’s always there. After the long trek down the Street, we arrived at the sparsely occupied dance floor bathed in diva dance jams and a somewhat weak strobe light. The songs were full of strong female vocals and evoked mental images of tight leather jeans and a red Mustang. As Madonna told us of girls gone wild and Britney promised us emotional servitude and then some (“I’m a slaaave 4 U/I won’t deny it/I’m not trying to hide it”), we were transported back to a simpler time, when your biggest relationship problem was whether or not your crush would be able to interpret your snarky comments as love. When asked about his musical style, the DJ replied smartly, “Stay and you’ll find out.” Alas, duty called, and the chorus of Pitbull’s “I Know You Want Me” marched us back out to the Street.

STREET: What’s hot on campus?

Senior Thesis Production: “Weehawken”

Come check out a new opera depicting the infamous duel in Weehawken, N.J., between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. This production illustrates the charged historical background of the exchange from the slanderous politics of the 1804 election to Hamilton’s scandalous affair with Maria Reynolds. Using letters, speeches and songs of the time, this piece paints an authentic portrait of the exciting turn of the 19th century. With the music and libretto by Flannery Cunningham ’13, stage direction by David Kellett, music direction by Kamna Gupta ’14, rehearsal piano by Paul Noh, costumes by Carina De La Paz ’13, wigs by Marie Miller and set construction by Joshua Haecker ’13, a fun time is promised for all!

STREET: In Defense of: The Architecture Building

Admission decisions have just been announced for the Class of 2017. As this select group of students tries to decide whether or not they want to attend Princeton (the choice is obvious, really) they will, among other things, be visiting campus, taking tours and poring over guidebooks and brochures.
